Here's how I see it. The day BBM came out my facebook was bombarded with status updates of PINs. This shows that it has developed a following and is relatively popular.
Now, there are two options to communicate, via SMS or data. I am not sure what kind of data BBM, WhatsApp or the like use, but I am sure it is insignificant.
The only downfall to these data-based messaging clients is that there are a ton of them, WhatsApp, Kik, Hookt, etc etc etc. For one to be effective, it has to be used by all of your friends. Why would I want 3 of my friends on WhatsApp, 2 of my friends using Kik, and another 3 friends on Hookt. That's just silly and annoying.
I think that, if Blackberry doesn't fuck it up, BBM can and will be the single go-to data-based messenger. If everyone is using it, it will be worth it to get it.
There are no set advantages to using it over SMS besides not using allotted monthly texts. One advantage (and one of the main selling points for me) was the group message functionality. Sending a group message with my Android phone is the worst thing in the world. The conversation doesn't act as a group conversation. All responses are directed to each individual recipient in its own thread, this defeating the purpose of a group thread. BBM has a flawless group messaging system that maintains a single thread for all responses.
